These Broadcom® high gain series couplers use a Light Emitting Diode and an integrated high gain photodetector to provide extremely high current transfer ratio between input and output. Separate pins for the photodiode and output stage result in TTL-compatible saturation voltages and high speed operation. Where desired the VCC and VO terminals may be tied together to achieve conventional photodarlington operation. A base access terminal allows a gain bandwidth adjustment to be made. The 6N139, HCPL-0701, and HCNW139 are for use in CMOS, LSTTL or other low power applications. A 400% minimum current transfer ratio is guaranteed over 0 to 70°C operating range for only 0.5 mA of LED current. The 6N138, HCPL-0700, and HCNW138 are designed for use mainly in TTL applications. Current Transfer Ratio (CTR) is 300% minimum over 0 to 70°C for an LED current of 1.6 mA (1 TTL Unit load ). A 300% minimum CTR enables operation with 1 TTL Load using a 2.2 kΩ pull-up resistor.

These diode-transistor optocouplers use an insulating layer between a LED and an integrated photodetector to provide electrical insulation between input and output. Separate connections for the photodiode bias and output-transistor collector increase the speed up to a hundred times that of a conventional phototransistor coupler by reducing the base-collector capacitance. These single channel optocouplers are available in 8-Pin DIP, SO-8 and Widebody package configurations. The HCPL-4502/4503 and HCNW4502/4503 are designed for high speed TTL/TTL applications. A standard 16 mA TTL sink current through the input LED will provide enough output current for 1 TTL load and a 5.6 kΩ pull-up resistor. CTR for these devices is 19% minimum at IF=16mA.

The HCPL-4562 and HCNW4562 optocouplers provide wide-bandwidth isolation for analog signals. They are ideal for video isolation when combined with their application circuit (Figure 4). High linearity and low phase shift are achieved through an AlGaAs LED combined with a high-speed detector. These single-channel optocouplers are available in 8-pin DIP and wide-body package configurations.

The HCPL-3120 contains a GaAsP LED while the HCPL-J312 and the HCNW3120 contain an AlGaAs LED. The LED is optically coupled to an integrated circuit with a power output stage. These optocouplers are ideally suited for driving power IGBTs and MOSFETs used in motor control inverter applications. The high operating voltage range of the output stage provides the drive voltages required by gate controlled devices. The voltage and current supplied by these optocouplers make them ideally suited for directly driving IGBTs with ratings up to 1200 V/100 A. For IGBTs with higher ratings, the HCPL-3120 series can be used to drive a discrete power stage which drives the IGBT gate. The HCNW3120 has the highest insulation voltage of VIORM=1414Vpeak in the IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5. The HCPL-J312 has an insulation voltage of VIORM = 1230Vpeak and the VIORM = 630Vpeak is also available with the HCPL-3120 (Option 060).

The HCTL-20XX-XX is CMOS ICs that perform the quadrature decoder, counter, and bus interface function. The HCTL-20XX-XX is designed to improve system performance in digital closed loop motion control systems and digital data input systems. It does this by shifting time intensive quadrature decoder functions to a cost effective hardware solution. The HCTL-20XX-XX consists of a quadrature decoder logic, a binary up/down state counter, and an 8-bit bus interface. The HCTL-20XX-XX contains 32-bit counter and provides LSTLL compatible tri-state output buffers. Operation is specified for a temperature range from -40 to +100°C at clock frequencies up to 33MHz. The HCTL-2032 and HCTL-2032-SC have dual-axis capability and index channel support. Both devices can be programmed as 4x/2x/1x count mode. The HCTL-2032 and HCTL2032-SC also provides quadrature decoder output signals and cascade signals for use with many standard computer ICs. The HCTL-2022 has most of the HCTL-2032 features, but it can only supports single axis and fixed at 4x count mode. The HCTL-2022 doesn’t provide decoder output and cascade signals.

The HCPL-4100 optocoupler is designed to operate as a transmitter in equipment using the 20 mA current loop. 20 mA current loop systems conventionally signal a logic high state by transmitting 20 mA of loop current (MARK), and signal a logic low state by allowing no more than a few milliamperes of loop current (SPACE). Optical coupling of the signal from the logic input to the 20 mA current loop breaks ground loops and provides very high immunity to common mode interference. The HCPL-4100 data input is compatible with LSTTL, TTL, or CMOS logic gates. The input integrated circuit drives a GaAsP LED. The light emitted by the LED is sensed by a second integrated circuit that allows 20 mA to pass with a voltage drop of less than 2.7 volts when no light is emitted and allows less than 2 mA to pass when light is emitted. The transmitter output is capable of withstanding 27 volts. The input integrated circuit provides a controlled amount of LED drive current and takes into account any LED light output degradation. The internal shield allows a guaranteed 1000 V/μs common mode transient immunity.

The HCPL-7860/HCPL-786J Optically Isolated Modulator and HCPL-0872 Digital Interface IC or digital filter together form an isolated programmable two-chip analog-to-digital converter. The isolated modulator allows direct measurement of motor phase currents in power inverters. In operation, the HCPL-7860/HCPL-786J Isolated Modulator converts a low-bandwidth analog input into a highspeed one-bit data stream by means of a Sigma-Delta (Σ−∆) over-sampling modulator. This modulation provides for high noise margins and excellent immunity against isolation-mode transients. The modulator data and onchip sampling clock are encoded and transmitted across the isolation boundary where they are recovered and decoded into separate high-speed clock and data channels.
