The MAX135 is a CMOS 15-bit, binary-output analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Multi-slope integration provides low-noise and high-resolution conversions in less time than standard integrating ADCs: The MAX135 is tested at 16 conversions per second, but operates at up to 6 times that rate. The MAX135 uses Super LSBs with data averaging to achieve 18-bit resolution. Supply current is 1250 maximum during normal opera-tion and only 10AA maximum in sleep mode. Low con-version noise allows tested operation at only 300mV full scale (150 per LSB). A simple 8-bit parallel data bus and three control lines easily interface to all common microprocessors, and twos-complement output coding simplifies bipolar measurements. High resolution and compact size make the MAX135 ideal for data loggers, numerical control systems, weigh scales, data-acquisition systems, and panel meters. The MAX135 comes in 28-pin DIP and SO packages in both commercial and extended temperature grades.

The MAX1482 and MAX1483 are low-power transceivers for RS-485 and RS-422 communication. Both feature slew-rate-limited drivers that minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables. Data rates are guaranteed up to 250kbps. The MAX1482/MAX1483 draw only 20µA of supply current. Additionally, they have a low-current shutdown mode that consumes only 0.1µA. Both parts operate from a single +5V supply. Drivers are short-circuit current limited and are protected against excessive power dissipation by thermal shutdown circuitry that places the driver outputs into a high-impedance state. The receiver input has a fail-safe feature that guarantees a logic-high output if the input is open circuit. The MAX1482 is full duplex and the MAX1483 is half duplex. Both parts have a 1⁄8-unit-load input impedance that guarantees up to 256 transceivers on the bus.

The MAX146/MAX147 12-bit data-acquisition systems combine an 8-channel multiplexer, high-bandwidth track/hold, and serial interface with high conversion speed and low power consumption. The MAX146 operates from a single +2.7V to +3.6V supply; the MAX147 operates from a single +2.7V to +5.25V supply. Both devices’ analog inputs are software configurable for unipolar/bipolar and single-ended/differential operation. The 4-wire serial interface connects directly to SPI™/ QSPI™ and MICROWIRE™ devices without external logic. A serial strobe output allows direct connection to TMS320-family digital signal processors. The MAX146/MAX147 use either the internal clock or an external serial-interface clock to perform successive-approximation analog-to-digital conversions. The MAX146 has an internal 2.5V reference, while the MAX147 requires an external reference. Both parts have a reference-buffer amplifier with a ±1.5% voltageadjustment range. These devices provide a hard-wired SHDN pin and a software-selectable power-down, and can be programmed to automatically shut down at the end of a conversion. Accessing the serial interface automatically powers up the MAX146/MAX147, and the quick turn-on time allows them to be shut down between all conversions. This technique can cut supply current to under 60µA at reduced sampling rates. The MAX146/MAX147 are available in 20-pin DIP and SSOP packages. The DS1302 trickle-charge timekeeping chip contains a real-time clock/calendar and 31 bytes of static RAM. It communicates with a microprocessor via a simple serial interface. The real-time clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The end of the month date is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year. The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. Interfacing the DS1302 with a microprocessor is simplified by using synchronous serial communication. Only three wires are required to communicate with the clock/RAM: CE, I/O (data line), and SCLK (serial clock). Data can be transferred to and from the clock/RAM 1 byte at a time or in a burst of up to 31 bytes. The DS1302 is designed to operate on very low power and retain data and clock information on less than 1µW. The DS1302 is the successor to the DS1202. In addition to the basic timekeeping functions of the DS1202, the DS1302 has the additional features of dual power pins for primary and backup power supplies, programmable trickle charger for VCC1, and seven additional bytes of scratchpad memory.

The MAX132 is a CMOS, 18-bit plus sign, serial-output, analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The MAX1240/MAX1241 low-power, 12-bit analog-todigital converters (ADCs) are available in 8-pin packages. The MAX1240 operates with a single +2.7V to +3.6V supply, and the MAX1241 operates with a single +2.7V to +5.25V supply. Both devices feature a 7.5µs successive-approximation ADC, a fast track/hold (1.5µs), an on-chip clock, and a high-speed, 3-wire serial interface. Power consumption is only 37mW (VDD = 3V) at the 73ksps maximum sampling speed. A 2µA shutdown mode reduces power at slower throughput rates. The MAX1240 has an internal 2.5V reference, while the MAX1241 requires an external reference. The MAX1241 accepts signals from 0V to VREF, and the reference input range includes the positive supply rail. An external clock accesses data from the 3-wire interface, which connects directly to standard microcontroller I/O ports. The interface is compatible with SPI™, QSPI™, and MICROWIRE™. Excellent AC characteristics and very low power combined with ease of use and small package size make these converters ideal for remote-sensor and dataacquisition applications, or for other circuits with demanding power consumption and space requirements. The DS1232LP/LPS Low Power MicroMonitor Chip monitors three vital conditions for a microprocessor: power supply, software execution, and external over-ride. First, a precision temperaturecompensated reference and comparator circuit monitors the status of VCC. When an out-of-tolerance condition occurs, an internal power-fail signal is generated which forces reset to the active state. When VCC returns to an in-tolerance condition, the reset signals are kept in the active state for a minimum of 250 ms to allow the power supply and processor to stabilize.

The devices operate with a single +5V supply or dual ±5V supplies. The analog inputs are software configurable for unipolar/bipolar and single-ended/differential operation. The 4-wire serial interface directly connects to SPI, QSPI™ and MICROWIRE® devices without external logic. A serial strobe output allows direct connection to TMS320 family digital signal processors. The MAX186/MAX188 use either the internal clock or an external serial-interface clock to perform successiveapproximation A/D conversions. The serial interface can operate beyond 4MHz when the internal clock is used. The MAX186 has an internal 4.096V reference while the MAX188 requires an external reference. Both parts have a reference-buffer amplifier that simplifies gain trim . The MAX186/MAX188 provide a hard-wired SHDN pin and two software-selectable power-down modes. Accessing the serial interface automatically powers up the devices, and the quick turn-on time allows the MAX186/MAX188 to be shut down between every conversion. Using this technique of powering down between conversions, supply current can be cut to under 10µA at reduced sampling rates. The MAX186/MAX188 are available in 20-pin PDIP and SO packages, and in a shrink small-outline package (SSOP), that occupies 30% less area than an 8-pin PDIP. The MAX155/MAX156 are high-speed, 8-bit, multichannel analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with simultaneous track/holds (T/Hs) to eliminate timing differences between input channel samples. The MAX155 has 8 analog input channels and the MAX156 has 4 analog input channels. Each channel has its own T/H, and all T/Hs sample at the same instant. The ADC converts a channel in 3.6µs and stores the result in an internal 8x8 RAM. The MAX155/ MAX156 also feature a 2.5V internal reference and power-down capability, providing a complete, sampling data-acquisition system. When operating from a single +5V supply, the MAX155/ MAX156 perform either unipolar or bipolar, single-ended or differential conversions. For applications requiring wider dynamic range or bipolar conversions around ground, the VSS supply pin may be connected to -5V. Conversions are initiated with a pulse to the WR pin, and data is accessed from the ADC’s RAM with a pulse to the RD pin. A bidirectional interface updates the channel configuration and provides output data. The ADC may also be wired for output-only operation.The MAX155 comes in 28-pin PDIP and wide SO packages, and the MAX156 comes in 24-pin narrow PDIP and 28-pin wide SO packages.

The MAX197 multi-range, 12-bit data-acquisition system (DAS) requires only a single +5V supply for operation, yet accepts signals at its analog inputs that may span both above the power-supply rail and below ground. This system provides 8 analog input channels that are independently software programmable for a variety of ranges: ±10V, ±5V, 0V to +10V, or 0V to +5V. This increases effective dynamic range to 14 bits, and provides the user flexibility to interface 4mA-to-20mA, ±12V, and ±15V powered sensors to a single +5V system. In addition, the converter is overvoltage tolerant to ±16.5V; a fault condition on any channel does not affect the conversion result of the selected channel. Other features include a 5MHz bandwidth track/hold, a 100ksps throughput rate, software-selectable internal or external clock and acquisition, 8+4 parallel interface, and an internal 4.096V or an external reference. A hardware SHDN pin and two programmable powerdown modes (STBYPD, FULLPD) are provided for lowcurrent shutdown between conversions. In STBYPD mode, the reference buffer remains active, eliminating start-up delays. The MAX197 employs a standard microprocessor (µP) interface. A three-state data I/O port is configured to operate with 8-bit data buses, and data-access and bus-release timing specifications are compatible with most popular µPs. All logic inputs and outputs are TTL/CMOS compatible. The MAX197 is available in 28-pin DIP, wide SO, SSOP, and ceramic SB packages. The MAX317/MAX318/MAX319 are precision, CMOS, monolithic analog switches. The single-pole singlethrow (SPST) MAX317 is normally closed (NC), the SPST MAX318 is normally open (NO), and the singlepole double-throw (SPDT) MAX319 has one normally open and one normally closed switch. All three parts offer low on resistance (less than 35Ω), guaranteed to match within 2Ω between channels and to remain flat over the analog signal range (∆3Ω max). They also offer low leakage (less than 250pA at +25°C and less than 6nA at +85°C) and fast switching (turn-on time less than 175ns and turn-off time less than 145ns). The MAX317/MAX318/MAX319 are fabricated with Maxim’s new improved silicon-gate process. Design improvements guarantee extremely low charge injection (10pC), low power consumption (35µW), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) greater than ±2000V. The 44V maximum breakdown voltage allows rail-to-rail analog signal handling capability.

The MAX3080–MAX3089 high-speed transceivers for RS-485/RS-422 communication contain one driver and one receiver. These devices feature fail-safe circuitry, which guarantees a logic-high receiver output when the receiver inputs are open or shorted. This means that the receiver output will be a logic high if all transmitters on a terminated bus are disabled (high impedance). The MAX3080/MAX3081/MAX3082 feature reduced slew-rate drivers that minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, allowing error-free data transmission up to 115kbps. The MAX3083/MAX3084/MAX3085 offer higher driver output slew-rate limits, allowing transmit speeds up to 500kbps. The MAX3086/MAX3087/MAX3088’s driver slew rates are not limited, making transmit speeds up to 10Mbps possible. The MAX3089’s slew rate is selectable between 115kbps, 500kbps, and 10Mbps by driving a selector pin with a single three-state driver. These transceivers typically draw 375µA of supply current when unloaded, or when fully loaded with the drivers disabled. All devices have a 1/8-unit-load receiver input impedance that allows up to 256 transceivers on the bus. The MAX3082/MAX3085/MAX3088 are intended for halfduplex communications, while the MAX3080/MAX3081/ MAX3083/MAX3084/MAX3086/MAX3087 are intended for full-duplex communications. The MAX3089 is selectable between half-duplex and full-duplex operation. It also features independently programmable receiver and transmitter output phase via separate pins.

The MAX516 combines four low-power, programmable-threshold comparators on a single CMOS IC. Separate 8-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) drive the com-parator inverting (-) inputs so that individual trip thresholds can be digitally set. The MAX639/MAX640/MAX653 step-down switching regulators provide high efficiency over a wide range of load currents, delivering up to 225mA. A current-limiting pulse-frequency-modulated (PFM) control scheme gives the devices the benefits of pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters (high efficiency at heavy loads), while using only 10µA of supply current (vs. 2mA to 10mA for PWM converters). The result is high efficiency over a wide range of loads. The MAX639/MAX640/MAX653 input range is 4V to 11.5V, and the devices provide lower preset output voltages of 5V, 3.3V, and 3V, respectively. Or, the output can be user-adjusted to any voltage from 1.3V to the input voltage. The MAX541/MAX542 are serial-input, voltage-output, 16-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that operate from a single +5V supply. They provide 16-bit performance (±1LSB INL and DNL) over temperature without any adjustments. The DAC output is unbuffered, resulting in a low supply current of 0.3mA and a low offset error of 1LSB. The DAC output range is 0V to VREF. For bipolar operation, matched scaling resistors are provided in the MAX542 for use with an external precision op amp (such as the MAX400), generating a ±VREF output swing. The MAX542 also includes Kelvin-sense connections for the reference and analog ground pins to reduce layout sensitivity. A 16-bit serial word is used to load data into the DAC latch. Maxim’s MAX630 and MAX4193 CMOS DC-DC regulators are designed for simple, efficient, minimum-size DC-DC converter circuits in the 5mW to 5W range. The MAX630 and MAX4193 provide all control and power handling functions in a compact 8-pin package: a 1.31V bandgap reference, an oscillator, a voltage comparator, and a 375mA N-channel output MOSFET. A comparator is also provided for low-battery detection. Operating current is only 70µA and is nearly independent of output switch current or duty cycle. A logic-level input shuts down the regulator to less than 1µA quiescent current. Low-current operation ensures high efficiency even in low-power battery-operated systems. The MAX630 and MAX4193 are compatible with most battery voltages, operating from 2.0V to 16.5V. The devices are pin compatible with the Raytheon bipolar circuits, RC4191/2/3, while providing significantly improved efficiency and low-voltage operation. Maxim also manufactures the MAX631, MAX632, and MAX633 DC-DC converters, which reduce the external component count in fixed-output 5V, 12V, and 15V circuits. The MAX667 low-dropout, positive, linear voltage regulator supplies up to 250mA of output current. With no load, it has a typical quiescent current of 20µA. At 200mA of output current, the input/output voltage differential is typically 150mV. Other features include a lowvoltage detector to indicate power failure, as well as early-warning and low-dropout detectors to indicate an imminent loss of output voltage regulation. A shutdown control disables the output and puts the circuit into a low quiescent-current mode. The MAX667 employs Dual Mode™ operation. One mode uses internally trimmed feedback resistors to produce +5V. In the other mode, the output may be varied from +1.3V to +16V by connecting two external resistors. The MAX667 is a pin-compatible upgrade to the MAX666 in most applications where the input voltages are above +3.5V. Choose the MAX667 when high output currents and/or low dropout voltages are desired, as well as for improved performance at higher temperatures.

The MAX663/664/666 CMOS voltage regulators have a maximum quiescent current of 12AA. They can be used either as 5 volt, fixed output regulators with no additional components, or can be adjusted from 1.3V to 16V using two external resistors. Fixed or adjustable operation is automatically selected via the VsET input. The MAX66X series, ideally suited for battery powered systems, has an input voltage range of 2 to 18.5V, an output current capability of 40mA, and can operate with low input-output differentials. Other features include current limiting and low power shut down. The MAX663 positive regulator and MAX664 negative regulator are both pin and electrically compatible with the ICL7663 and ICL7664 and can plug-in replace these devices, Improving performance and eliminating the need for external resistors in 5V applications. The MAX666 has a positive output and includes on-chip low-battery detection circuitry.

The MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487–MAX491, and MAX1487 are low-power transceivers for RS-485 and RS422 communication. Each part contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX483, MAX487, MAX488, and MAX489 feature reduced slew-rate drivers that minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, thus allowing error-free data transmission up to 250kbps. The driver slew rates of the MAX481, MAX485, MAX490, MAX491, and MAX1487 are not limited, allowing them to transmit up to 2.5Mbps. These transceivers draw between 120µA and 500µA of supply current when unloaded or fully loaded with disabled drivers. Additionally, the MAX481, MAX483, and MAX487 have a low-current shutdown mode in which they consume only 0.1µA. All parts operate from a single 5V supply. Drivers are short-circuit current limited and are protected against excessive power dissipation by thermal shutdown circuitry that places the driver outputs into a high-impedance state. The receiver input has a fail-safe feature that guarantees a logic-high output if the input is open circuit. The MAX487 and MAX1487 feature quarter-unit-load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 MAX487/ MAX1487 transceivers on the bus. Full-duplex communications are obtained using the MAX488–MAX491, while the MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487, and MAX1487 are designed for half-duplex applications.
