The DS1213C SmartSocket is a 28-pin, 600 mil DIP socket with a built-in CMOS controller circuit and an embedded lithium energy source. It accepts a 32K x 8 JEDEC bytewide CMOS static RAM. When the socket is mated with a CMOS RAM, it provides a complete solution o problems associated with memory volatility. The SmartSocket monitors incoming VCC for an out-of- tolerance condition. When such a condition occurs, the internal lithium energy source is automatically switched on and write protection is unconditionally enabled to prevent data corruption. Using the SmartSocket saves printed circuit board space since the SRAM/SmartSocket combination occupies no more area than the memory alone. The SmartSocket uses only Pins 20 and 28 for RAM control. The DS1216 SmartWatch RAM and SmartWatch ROM sockets are 600-mil-wide DIP sockets with a built-in CMOS watch function, an NV RAM controller circuit, and an embedded lithium energy source. The sockets provide an NV RAM solution for memory sized from 2K x 8 to 512K x 8 with package sizes from 26 pins to 32 pins. The DS12885, DS12887, and DS12C887 real-time clocks (RTCs) are designed to be direct replacements for the DS1285 and DS1287. The devices provide a real-time clock/calendar, one time-of-day alarm, three maskable interrupts with a common interrupt output, a programmable square wave, and 114 bytes of batterybacked static RAM (113 bytes in the DS12C887 and DS12C887A). The DS12887 integrates a quartz crystal and lithium energy source into a 24-pin encapsulated DIP package. The DS12C887 adds a century byte at address 32h. For all devices, the date at the end of the month is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including correction for leap years. The devices also operate in either 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. A precision temperature-compensated circuit monitors the status of VCC. If a primary power failure is detected, the device automatically switches to a backup supply. A lithium coin-cell battery can be connected to the VBAT input pin on the DS12885 to maintain time and date operation when primary power is absent. The device is accessed through a multiplexed byte-wide interface, which supports both Intel and Motorola modes.

The DS1302 trickle-charge timekeeping chip contains a real-time clock/calendar and 31 bytes of static RAM. It communicates with a microprocessor via a simple serial interface. The real-time clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The end of the month date is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year. The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. Interfacing the DS1302 with a microprocessor is simplified by using synchronous serial communication. Only three wires are required to communicate with the clock/RAM: CE, I/O (data line), and SCLK (serial clock). Data can be transferred to and from the clock/RAM 1 byte at a time or in a burst of up to 31 bytes. The DS1302 is designed to operate on very low power and retain data and clock information on less than 1µW. The DS1302 is the successor to the DS1202. In addition to the basic timekeeping functions of the DS1202, the DS1302 has the additional features of dual power pins for primary and backup power supplies, programmable trickle charger for VCC1, and seven additional bytes of scratchpad memory.

The DS1742 is a full-function, year 2000-compliant (Y2KC), real-time clock/calendar (RTC) and 2k x 8 nonvolatile static RAM. User access to all registers within the DS1742 is accomplished with a bytewide interface as shown in Figure 1. The RTC information and control bits reside in the eight uppermost RAM locations. The RTC registers contain century, year, month, date, day, hours, minutes, and seconds data in 24-hour BCD format. Corrections for the day of the month and leap year are made automatically. The RTC clock registers are double-buffered to avoid access of incorrect data that can occur during clock update cycles. The double-buffered system also prevents time loss as the timekeeping countdown continues unabated by access to time register data. The DS1742 also contains its own power-fail circuitry, which deselects the device when the VCC supply is in an out-of-tolerance condition. This feature prevents loss of data from unpredictable system operation brought on by low VCC as errant access and update cycles are avoided.

The DS18B20 digital thermometer provides 9-bit to 12-bit Celsius temperature measurements and has an alarm function with nonvolatile user-programmable upper and lower trigger points. The DS18B20 communicates over a 1-Wire bus that by definition requires only one data line (and ground) for communication with a central microprocessor. In addition, the DS18B20 can derive power directly from the data line (“parasite power”), eliminating the need for an external power supply. Each DS18B20 has a unique 64-bit serial code, which allows multiple DS18B20s to function on the same 1-Wire bus. Thus, it is simple to use one microprocessor to control many DS18B20s distributed over a large area. The DS275 Line-Powered RS-232 Transceiver Chip is a CMOS device that provides a low-cost, very low-power interface to RS-232 serial ports. The receiver input translates RS-232 signal levels to common CMOS/TTL levels. The transmitter employs a unique circuit which steals current from the receive RS232 signal when that signal is in a negative state (marking). Since most serial communication ports remain in a negative state statically, using the receive signal for negative power greatly reduces the DS275’s static power consumption. This feature is especially important for battery-powered systems such as laptop computers, remote sensors, and portable medical instruments. During an actual communication session, the DS275’s transmitter will use system power (5-12 volts) for positive transitions while still employing the receive signal for negative transitions.

The DS87C520 EPROM/ROM high-speed microcontrollers are fast 8051-compatible microcontrollers. They feature a redesigned processor core without wasted clock and memory cycles. As a result, the devices execute every 8051 instruction between 1.5 and 3 times faster than the original for the same crystal speed. Typical applications will see a speed improvement of 2.5 times using the same code and the same crystal. The DS87C520/DS83C520 offer a maximum crystal speed of 33MHz, resulting in apparent execution speeds of 82.5MHz (approximately 2.5X). The DS87C520/DS83C520 are pin compatible with all three packages of the standard 8051, and include standard resources such as three timer/counters, serial port, and four 8-bit I/O ports. They feature 16kB of EPROM or mask ROM with an extra 1kB of data RAM. Both OTP and windowed packages are available. Besides greater speed, the microcontroller includes a second full hardware serial port, seven additional interrupts, programmable Watchdog Timer, Brownout Monitor, and Power-Fail Reset. The device also provides dual data pointers (DPTRs) to speed block data memory moves. It also can adjust the speed of MOVX data memory access from two to nine machine cycles for flexibility in selecting external memory and peripherals. A new Power Management Mode (PMM) is useful for portable applications. This feature allows software to select a lower speed clock as the main time base. While normal operation has a machine cycle rate of 4 clocks per cycle, the PMM runs the processor at 64 or 1024 clocks per cycle. For example, at 12MHz, standard operation has a machine cycle rate of 3MHz. In Power Management Mode, software can select either 187.5kHz or 11.7kHz machine cycle rate. There is a corresponding reduction in power consumption when the processor runs slower. The EMI reduction feature allows software to select a reduced emission mode. This disables the ALE signal when it is unneeded. The DS83C520 is a factory mask ROM version of the DS87C520 designed for high-volume, costsensitive applications. It is identical in all respects to the DS87C520, except that the 16kB of EPROM is replaced by a user-supplied application program. All references to features of the DS87C520 will apply to the DS83C520, with the exception of EPROM-specific features where noted. The DS87C530/DS83C530 EPROM/ROM microcontrollers with a real-time clock (RTC) are 8051- compatible microcontrollers based on the Dallas Semiconductor high-speed core. They use 4 clocks per instruction cycle instead of the 12 used by the standard 8051. They also provide a unique mix of peripherals not widely available on other processors. The device can also be easily substituted in ROM, EPROM, and EEPROM sockets, providing read/write nonvolatility and the addition of the real-time clock function. The real-time clock information resides in the eight uppermost RAM locations. The RTC registers contain year, month, date, day, hours, minutes, and seconds data in 24-hour BCD format. Corrections for the day of the month and leap year are made automatically. The RTC clock registers are double-buffered to avoid access of incorrect data that can occur during clock update cycles. The double-buffered system also prevents time loss as the timekeeping countdown continues unabated by access to time register data. The DS1642 also contains its own power-fail circuitry, which deselects the device when the VCC supply is in an out-of-tolerance condition. This feature prevents loss of data from unpredictable system operation brought on by low VCC as errant access and update cycles are avoided.
